NIF for foreign buyers: where to get it in Portugal

A foreign citizen can get a Portuguese tax number (NIF) at any tax office or Loja do Cidadão, by appointment, with a passport and proof of the foreign address. A representative needs a power of attorney, or can use the Portal das Finanças e-balcão.

Documents

Passport or other ID, and a document showing the foreign address unless the ID shows it

ID of the representative and a power of attorney; the signature must be recognised unless it is given to a lawyer or solicitor
